The Byzantine Empire of the Crusades era fielded one of the most sophisticated and professional armies in the medieval world. Drawing on centuries of Roman military tradition blended with Greek, Anatolian, and Balkan influences, Byzantine infantry were disciplined, well-equipped, and versatile. During the tumultuous period of the First through Fourth Crusades, Byzantine spearmen formed the core of the Tagmata and Thematic armies — holding the line against Seljuk Turks, Norman adventurers, and Crusader lords alike, often fighting all three in the same decade.
