Ride out with the elite heavy cavalry of the Islamic world — Seljuk Askaris and Syrian horsemen who shaped the battlefields of the Crusades!

These sprues represent the Seljuk and Syrian heavy cavalry of the 12th to 13th Centuries, combining hard plastic components to build four Islamic heavy cavalry figures with exceptional variety in armour, weapons, and equipment.

Armour & Equipment

  • A mix of mail and lamellar armour styles reflecting the diverse origins of Islamic cavalry
  • Varying helmets from all-enclosing mail hoods with elaborate spiked helmets to open-faced helmets with turbans
  • Optional bow cases and arrow quivers — Arab heavy cavalry did not use the bow, but Seljuk Askaris did
  • Bow-firing arms included alongside swords, spears, lances, axes, and maces
  • Plenty of shield options for further variety

Seljuk Turkish Components

Seljuk Turks formed a large proportion of any Amir's household troops in Syria and Egypt. This set includes dedicated Seljuk heads with their distinctive hair in three braids — two to the sides of the head and one down the back. Also included is the Sharbush, the Seljuk fur cap worn by Chieftains — and reportedly worn by Saladin himself over the top of his helmet or mail hood.

Swords are a mix of the straight-bladed type and the curved sabre.

Historical Background

The heavy cavalry of the Islamic world during the Crusading era was a formidable and varied force. Seljuk Askaris brought the traditions of the Central Asian steppe — mounted archery, speed, and shock — while Syrian and Egyptian heavy cavalry combined these with captured Crusader equipment and local fighting styles. Islamic armies made great use of captured Crusader armour, weapons, and shields, meaning a Norman cavalry figure with the addition of a turbaned head, Islamic shield, and weapon arm could ride alongside Fatimid Egyptian cavalry units.

Compatibility & Conversion

For further flexibility, many of the heads, shields, and weapons from this set combine with the Norman cavalry set to create additional varieties of Arab cavalry — an ideal solution for building diverse Fatimid Egyptian or Syrian forces.

Game System Compatibility

  • Hail Caesar — ideal for Crusades-era Islamic armies
  • SAGA: Age of Crusades — excellent heavy cavalry option for Saracen or Seljuk warbands

  • Compatible with Norman cavalry and other Victrix medieval ranges for expanded forces
  • Each purchase is for sprues building 4 cavalry figures
