What's in the Box?

  • 12 x Heavy Dragoons and 12 horses
  • Two sets of arms representing British regiments and the King's German Legion (KGL)
  • Two sword scabbard options: scabbard alone, or scabbard with sabretache
  • Officer head options: bicorn or cylindrical shako with cords

Historical Period & Uniform

This uniform was in use up to 1812 and likely continued into 1813 due to the sporadic supply issues common to all armies during the Napoleonic Wars — as any student of the period knows, regulations and actual practice are rarely the same thing, even today.

Key uniform features distinguishing this set from earlier Heavy Dragoon figures:

  • Shoulder wings
  • Horizontal bars of lace across the chest
  • No striped girdle under the sword belt
  • Distinctive cuff style — British regiments have a standard cuff; KGL figures feature a pointed cuff with chevrons of lace above it

The sabretache was officially issued to the heavy cavalry in 1812, though as with much equipment of the period, distribution to the troops likely lagged behind — both options are included for accuracy and flexibility.

Compatible Factions

  • British Heavy Dragoon regiments (Peninsular War, 1808–1814)
  • King's German Legion Heavy Cavalry
  • Suitable for any British or Allied heavy cavalry force of the early 19th century

Recommended Rulesets

  • Black Powder / Black Powder II — field as Heavy Cavalry in Napoleonic Peninsular War scenarios; pairs with the main Heavy Dragoons sprue for full units
  • Sharp Practice (TooFatLardies) — use as officer and NCO command figures for skirmish-level Peninsular War games
  • General d'Armée — ideal command figures for brigade-level Napoleonic battles
  • Lasalle (2nd Edition) — represent British heavy cavalry in the Napoleonic order of battle
  • The Silver Bayonet — the officer figure with bicorn or shako makes an excellent Napoleonic-era officer or specialist character for this gothic horror skirmish game; the command aesthetic suits unit leaders and named characters perfectly

Painting & Modelling Notes

  • The KGL pointed cuff with chevron lace is a distinctive painting target — a great way to differentiate KGL from British line regiments on the tabletop
  • The sabretache option adds a visually striking element and is worth including for display or character figures even if not used in all rank-and-file models
  • The bicorn officer head is ideal for senior officers or vignette pieces; the shako with cords suits a more active, campaign-ready look
