Despite these vast numbers, the Russians fared poorly against Germany and Austria-Hungary after initial successes, ground down by poor logistics, inadequate supply, and the relentless pressure of a two-front war. As the conflict dragged on, unrest at home led first to the February Revolution of 1917 and the downfall of the Tsar, then to a brutal civil war that would culminate in the formation of the Soviet Union.
