Historical Background

The Royal Artillery was a cornerstone of Wellington's army throughout the Napoleonic Wars. The 6-pounder was the standard British field gun of the Peninsular campaign, prized for its mobility across difficult terrain. The heavier 9-pounder saw increasing use as the war progressed, while the 5.5-inch howitzer provided vital indirect fire capability against troops in cover. At Waterloo, the Royal Artillery played a decisive role in breaking French cavalry charges and supporting the infantry squares that held the ridge until Blücher's Prussians arrived.
