Field the elite flank companies of Wellington's Peninsular army — the grenadiers and light infantry who led the assault, screened the advance, and held the line when it mattered most. With 52 highly detailed 28mm hard plastic figures and a full command set included, this box gives you everything needed to build a complete and characterful flank battalion.

Figures come unassembled and unpainted. Bases not included.

What's in the Box?

  • 52 x British Peninsular Flank Infantry figures
  • Stovepipe shakos with shoulder wings — the distinctive uniform of the flank companies during the Peninsular War
  • Full command figures including officers, standard bearers, NCOs, and drummers
  • Paper banners

Uniform & Appearance

The stovepipe shako and shoulder wings immediately identify these figures as flank company troops — the grenadier and light infantry companies that were the pride of each British battalion. The shoulder wings, worn in place of the standard epaulettes, were a mark of distinction that set these elite soldiers apart on the battlefield and on the tabletop.

Historical Background

The flank companies of the British infantry — the grenadier company on the right and the light company on the left — were the most experienced and capable soldiers in each battalion. During the Peninsular War (1808–1814), they were frequently detached and brigaded together into composite flank battalions, serving as shock troops in the assault or as skirmishers screening the main line. Regiments including the 52nd, 95th Rifles, and the light companies of the Guards all served with distinction under Wellington across Spain and Portugal.

Compatible Factions

  • British Grenadier companies (Peninsular War, 1808–1814)
  • British Light Infantry companies (Peninsular War)
  • Composite flank battalions
  • King's German Legion flank companies (with appropriate painting)

Recommended Rulesets

  • Black Powder  — field as elite infantry or light infantry skirmishers; the 52-figure count gives you a full battalion or two smaller units
  • Sharp Practice (TooFatLardies) — ideal for skirmish-level Peninsular War games, where flank company troops excel as independent detachments
  • General d'Armée — represent elite or light infantry at brigade level in large-scale Napoleonic engagements
  • Lasalle (2nd Edition) — field as British elite infantry in the Napoleonic order of battle
  • The Silver Bayonet — individual flank company figures make excellent specialist soldiers, officers, or named characters for this gothic horror skirmish game set during the Napoleonic Wars

Painting & Modelling Notes

  • The stovepipe shako is the key period identifier — correct for the Peninsular War but replaced by the Belgic shako before Waterloo, making these figures campaign-specific
  • Shoulder wings are typically faced in the regimental colour — a strong visual focal point that rewards careful painting
  • Grenadier companies traditionally wore white plumes; light companies wore green — a simple detail that adds immediate visual distinction between the two flank types
  • The command figures — officer, standard bearer, NCO, and drummer — make excellent centrepiece models and are worth painting to a higher standard for the tabletop
