Archers and crossbowmen supported massed spearmen, launched ambushes from rough terrain, and used concealment and mobility to unsettle enemies who expected a straightforward fight. There is even evidence the Picts employed an early form of crossbow similar to the late Roman arcuballista — whether for hunting or war, the effect on the receiving end was the same.
